Studies have shown that the essential oils in Lavender may lower cortisol levels, heart rate and blood pressure, hence reducing anxiety and its effects. The lavender aroma can even increase delta waves, creating a sense of calm and help sleep.
Valerian is an herb that has been used for centuries to reduce anxiety and calm. It is thought that the compound that is contained in Valerian, valerenic acid works on GABA receptors to reduce anxiolytic effects. In addition, valepotriates that give valerian its distinctive smell seem to have a similar effect of reducing anxiety.
The essential oils of Rosemary contain a wide range of compounds which seem to be responsible for its anxiolytic effects. It has also been shown to improve sleep quality and mood. Further studies have also shown that it may improve cognitive function.
